Right to grow in the bury

We have started with a few herbs and other late summer growers with the hope that these will bloom into a thriving patch for veg, fruit, and community spirit. This is our contribution to the Right To Grow Bury.

Why grow food at all?

At first glance, growing carrots and kale (if you can) alongside laptops and coffee mugs might seem unusual. But the benefits of bringing food growing into a shared workspace are a thing, and we are not just talking about the harvesting bit!

1. Improved Wellbeing

Spending time around plants lowers stress, boosts mood, and gives our minds a break from screens. A 10-minute break pulling weeds or watering seedlings is surprisingly powerful — and a lot more rewarding than scrolling on socials, we know you do it!

2. Healthier Eating

When food is growing right outside your door, you’re more likely to reach for something fresh. Maybe one day soon we can start adding rocket to sandwiches, mint to water bottles all grown on location!

3. Learning New Skills

Not everyone grew up gardening. So if this is your first time planting anything, what better place than Newtons! From seed to salad, an opportunity to learn a new skill in a comfortable, small-scale setting.

4. Community Connection

This might be the biggest benefit of all, we want the little garden at the back of Newtons to be a space for conversations and relaxing. Somewhere you can chat away from the desk. Maybe not this year, with it being August, but next year, with a full growing season behind us, the space will be amazing!

How To Get Involved?

There are two beds up for grabs at Newtons. You can take ownership of a bed just like an allotment and grow what you like, when you like and share what you like. We want the space to be part of the community, and that starts with you. We also have “grow days” throughout the year at The Eden-field Project, led by local growers who want to share their knowledge. A relaxed friendly environment that always ends with tea and biscuits.
