We Are Making MEad

That’s right, you read it correctly. We are making mead!

As you may know for many years we have been looking after Bee hives that have been placed on the roofs of some of our properties, and where there are bees there’s honey! For those of you who have been with us for a while you may remember that we did in fact used to collect and sell the honey the hives produced by the jar, but this has changed since COVID and now we have a bunch of honey with nowhere for it to go!

Cue the mead…

Now Matthew firmly believes that mead is the next gin and so we are getting ahead and dipping our toes into the mead making world with the help of The Lancashire Mead Company. The best part, the only ingredients needed and water and you guessed it… honey!

 

The Lancashire Mead Company is a husband and wife duo Gordon Baron and Anne Farrell that has been producing their own mead from various types of honey since 2009, when Gordon started brewing mead in his mum’s garage after being sick of not being able to find pure mead. The company was officially born In November 2013. Through years of trial and error they have mastered the craft of mead making magic, and even use ambient temperature fermentation processes, which keeps their carbon footprint low, something that is close to our own hearts, and gives each batch its uniqueness.

How Is Mead Made?

Mead is possibly the oldest alcoholic beverage that there is, and the thing that makes it so unique is the honey. Honey is the defining characteristic of mead and is the main source of its fermentable sugar. 

 

It is made by fermenting the honey with water and sometimes can be infused with different fruits and spices etc to get a desired taste. The mead making process can take up to several months as it is technically classed as a wine making process as opposed to a beer or lager process. This means we may have some winter spiced mead ready for our winter time Bev Fridays!

 

Interestingly, honey flavours taste greatly different based on  what the bees have been eating. This then has a knock on effect on the mead meaning flavoured honey can produce flavoured mead. So those Newtons bees are sure to produce a tasty mead!

 The Mead Making Process 

 

Excitingly, The Lancashire Mead Company allowed us in to discuss and film the mead making process and taught us how our honey was going to be crafted into some sweet, sweet mead! Ann and Gordon were great and taught us everything there is to know about mead from the process to the history of mead and which our Viking ancestry may have preferred based on regional taste.

After adding the correct amount of water and nutrients our honey has officially begun the fermenting process on its way to becoming Newton’s very first batch of mead. Many years of experience has meant that The Lancashire Mead Company make their mead based off of taste and a well practised sense of when the mead needs a little something adding. Meaning we are in line to get some pretty tasty mead!
