international coworking day

Today is international coworking day, a day that is very near and dear to our hearts!

Community is at the heart of everything we do here at Newtons and today is a day to celebrate everything that us and our community members do to keep our wonderful community going! So we want to take the time to wish all of our fellow coworkers a Happy International Coworking Day and the same to those out there who have yet to dip their toes in to the coworking pool! We are waiting for you and the water is fine!

The history of coworking

Coworking, although it may still seem kind of niche, it is not entirely new. Coworking has been around for a good few years now and has been made ever more prevalent on the back of COVID. As people move towards a more hybrid working structure, people are needing more flexible office spaces that accommodate their need for less days within an office area.

Here’s a quick coworking timeline:

2002 – an ‘entrepreneurial centre’ was created and set up in Vienna by two Austrian entrepreneurs and although it was not labelled as a coworking space for all intents and purposes that was what it was.

2005 — On August 9th, Brad Neuberg a software engineer started a movement when he wrote a blog inviting people to work together – regardless of what they’re working on. He then set up the first-ever official coworking space in San Francisco at a feminist collective called ‘Spiral Muse’ in the Mission district of San Francisco. The space is intended to maintain the freedom of working independently whilst providing the structure and community of working with others.

2006 — From 2006, for the next seven years the number of coworking spaces and coworking members approximately doubles each year.

2007 — The first time that ‘coworking’ appeared as a trend on Google’s database.

2013 — Over 100,000 people worldwide working from coworking spaces.

2019 — Worldwide, over 21,000 coworking spaces by the end of 2019.

And that brings us to the present day, on the back of the pandemic. Coworking has so many benefits and has skyrocketed in popularity and has become a global phenomenon.

So what’s next?

As workplaces shift into more flexible working structures, businesses are looking to do so without the commitment of renting whole buildings. Statistics definitely suggest that a post COVID world will see a rise in popularity for coworking.

For a long time, spaces available for freelancers and start-ups were few and far between. This meant that working from home was the resort for many which could prove unproductive and isolating. Then in the early 00’s the call of the freelancer was answered and the introduction of coworking spaces began. Whilst they haven’t been around for long, in the time that they have been up and running, coworking spaces have become somewhat of a global phenomenon and are now a place for businesses of all types to work from whether it be a start-up or an international corporation.

 The history of Newtons

If you are local to the area you may remember Newtons as an old furniture shop and whilst we have still maintained the essence of the building we have transformed it from its past glory into a thriving community for co-workers. We want to create a place where likeminded individuals can come and connect with others on an hourly, monthly and daily basis. Creating an environment that is both productive and enjoyable is a balance that we take pride in and creating a positive community is something that we want to celebrate this International Coworking Day.
