Changes at Newtons
Newtons Coffee Co has been apart of the Newtons experience since June 2019, we have loved serving specialty coffee to our members, visitors, and the public. Newtons is open to all and the coffee shop was a way to encourage that openness, providing an open door and atmosphere that people could understand and approach from the high street.
The initial lockdown set out little coffee counter back and we were glad to reopen in the space in July ready for the summer and a new beginning, but with the new restrictions in place, like many others, we have had to close the coffee service (coworking, meeting rooms, event space and offices remain very much open). We have a few changes coming and we want your opinion, let us know what you think below.
What’s Next?
Since we started our coworking space in Feb 2018 more and more people have come to know and understand shared working and coworking, the need for a coffee shop to break down this barrier is no longer there. With this in mind, we are returning to our core and ensuring the front space can still accommodate our flexible workers.
This does mean there will be some changes to Newtons.
We have looked at how the space has worked over the last year with the coffee shop and smartphone access and we have a few changes we think will improve the service at Newtons.
Suggested Changes
Ensure the front space of Newtons can accommodate coworking / shared working safely.
We’ll bring back the long table, make a few interior changes but overall the same look and feel will be kept. We are hoping to keep the coffee counter in place and use this for high chairs and keep the sink in the corner for handwashing. The coloured doors will stay to create a more private environment in the front space and we’ll keep the cupboards and worktop in the alcove (behind the coffee counter) as well.
Change KISI access layout to improve internal systems
We are going to relocate the KISI hardware to the front doors. So swiping with the KISI lock will unlock both the front door and the glass double doors. We are doing this because we want to improve security in the front space, reduce the public space in Newtons (COVID), and also to reduce the distractions on coworkers for door access. What do you think? The Blackboard Door will remain where it is.
Install an intercom system for all office spaces (2-way talk, no access granting)
We will be limiting how far members of the public can access the building so we want to make sure any visitor can contact an office quickly. We’ll be adding an intercom system to all the office spaces so anyone at the front can buzz the office they need. The intercom will act as a notification and won’t be able to grant access, this is because we still need members of the public to be collected from the ground floor.
Install an external post box to improve post collection and control
We are pretty good at collecting the post, having the door open has helped. With these changes limiting the access we have opted for an (extra) large post and parcel box to collect post and parcels; another external store for even larger parcels, located at the rear of Newtons (you may want to provide delivery instructions to the ‘rear store’ as a safe location) and then remember, individual couriers will be able to call the space they are delivering to if a signature is required.
When?
The coffee counter is now closed following the introduction of Tier 3 last week, the front space is available but please stay clear of any work on-going in the front space. Use the grey door to access the front space. The front space will be fully open from 3rd Nov with the intercom aiming to be installed from the 9th Nov. The KISI hardware will be moved over from the 23rd Nov.
You will need you KISI access up and running from the 23rd Nov to access the building.
Your Space
We have laid out the suggested changes which we think will help take the space forward and sustain the community at Newtons but we are open to your feedback and suggestions. Help us by providing anonymous feedback with the survey below.
