How to Dig Up, Enjoy, and Replant Your Annual Christmas Tree
Did you know our Newton trees are replanted at The Eden-Field Project.
The annual Christmas trees—real, living evergreens that brighten up Newtons and The Flat spaces for the festive season, then return to the soil to thrive for another year.
Here’s how you can dig up, care for, and replant your tree, so it keeps giving for many Christmases to come.
1. Digging Up Your Tree: Timing & Technique
Aim to dig up your tree in late November or early December, just before the festive rush. Choose a dry day—wet soil can be heavy and messy.
2. How to Dig
-
Choose the Right Tree: Look for a healthy, well-shaped tree with a strong central leader (the main upward stem).
-
Dig a Wide Circle: Use a sharp spade to dig a circle at least 30cm out from the trunk. The wider the root ball, the better the tree’s chance of survival. We didn’t do this last year and our tree died after going back into the ground, so this one is a good one to watch.
-
Go Deep: Dig down about 30–45cm (1–1.5 feet), gently loosening the soil as you go.
-
Lift Carefully: Slide the spade under the root ball and lift the tree, keeping as much soil around the roots as possible.
-
Wrap the Roots: If you’re not planting straight away, wrap the root ball in burlap or a similar breathable fabric to keep it moist.
- Wash it down: We like to hose the tree down to wash away loose bits and leaves, saves dragging into the house / offices
3. Caring for Your Tree Indoors
Potting: Place your tree in a large pot with good drainage. Fill gaps with compost or garden soil, and water thoroughly.
Location: Choose a cool spot, away from radiators or direct heat sources. Living trees don’t love central heating!
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Check every few days—dry roots are the biggest threat.
Decorating: Use lightweight decorations and LED lights to avoid stressing the branches.
Timing: Try to keep the tree indoors for no more than 3–4 weeks. The less time inside, the better its chances when replanted.

When
As soon as the festivities are over (early January is ideal), it’s time to return your tree to the ground. For us, thats The Eden-Field Project grounds.
How to replant
- Pick the Right Spot: Choose a sheltered area with well-drained soil.
- Dig a Generous Hole: Make it twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
- Settle the Tree: Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it sits at the same depth as before.
- Backfill Carefully: Fill with soil, gently firming as you go to remove air pockets.
- Water Well: Give the tree a thorough watering to help it settle in.
