Tips, Tricks, and a Greener Autumn with Newtons
There’s something grand about the glow of a freshly carved pumpkin in autumn. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just getting started with the kids, pumpkin carving is a perfect way to celebrate the season, and bring a little extra warmth to your home or workspace.
But what happens after Halloween, when Christmas has come and Halloween banished! At Newtons. Read on for our top pumpkin carving tips, plus how you can give your pumpkin a second life through composting or even as a tasty treat for local chickens!
1. Pick the Perfect Pumpkin
- Look for a pumpkin with a flat base so it sits steady.
- Avoid any with soft spots or mould—these won’t last long once carved. We had a rotter on the carpet when we left them out for collection!
- For easier carving, choose one with a smooth surface.
2. Tools Make a Difference
- Use a serrated knife or a pumpkin carving kit for safer, cleaner cuts.
- An ice cream scoop or sturdy spoon works wonders for removing seeds and pulp.
3. Plan Your Design
- Sketch your design on paper first, or use a washable marker to draw directly on the pumpkin.
- Simple shapes are best for beginners, but don’t be afraid to get creative!
4. Carve from the Bottom
- Instead of removing the top, try cutting a hole in the bottom. It makes it easier to place a candle or LED inside and keeps the pumpkin fresher.
5. Preserve Your Pumpkin
- Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow down wilting.
- Keep your pumpkin cool and out of direct sunlight when not on display.
After the Fun: What to Do With Your Pumpkin
Pumpkins are fantastic for more than just decoration. Once the festivities are over, don’t just bin them—there are much better (and greener) options:
Composting
Pumpkins break down beautifully and add valuable nutrients to compost. If you don’t have your own compost heap, good news: you can drop off your used pumpkins at any Newtons space, and we’ll make sure they’re composted properly. It’s an easy way to give back and help local gardens thrive.
Feeding Chickens
Did you know chickens love pumpkin? If you—or a neighbour—keep chickens, carved pumpkins make a healthy, natural snack (just be sure there’s no wax, paint, or glitter left on them). It’s a win-win: less waste, happy hens.
Why It Matters
Every year, millions of pumpkins end up in landfill, creating unnecessary waste and greenhouse gases. By composting or feeding them to animals, you’re helping reduce your carbon footprint and supporting a more sustainable community—something we do like here at Newtons and The Eden-field Project.
