The Future of Coworking
Since the rise of COVID-19 during 2019 and 2020, this pandemic has certainly left a lasting mark on a global scale. Within the UK alone, there have been over 615K cases to date, and according to HSO, the recent UK’s Office of National Statistics showed that 49.2% of people are working from home as a direct result of the pandemic. Though working from home and staying socially distant is a great way to reduce the viral spread and remain safe during such uncertain times, we cannot ignore that this isolation is putting a significant hindrance on mental health, collaboration, and human connection.
Since the pandemic, the UK’s depression stats have jumped to 19.2% (based on June 2020 data), and much of that stems from the strict regulations when it comes to connecting and collaborating with others like they were able to previously. Overall, people crave and need that social interaction and ability to work with others, and even with the future of coworking after COVID-19 is still in the shadows, there is a promising solution: shared, flexible office spaces.
The Working from Home Paradigm Shift
Remote work was a rising aspect since the digital age, but there is no secret that the fire ignited in full force when COVID-19 struck, forcing people to go this route, whether they were ready or not. This fast track to working from home has drastically altered how businesses operate and have reshaped industry cultures. There are some benefits, such as more flexibility and reduced transportation time going from point A to B each day. But feelings of isolation hit an all-time high because blending home and work life makes it hard to surface clear delineations.
According to INC., Yelp did a survey that revealed 81% of people said their mental health was affected due to working from home. Even if the above is the world we live in right now, the real underlying question is whether it will stay this way after COVID-19 is finally over. And the answer may just be yes.

The Future
As of today The Hive team are moving in, they are preparing the space for a unique, boutique gym open to the public and Newton members. This space will be focused on functional training by yourself, through video coaching and when applicable coached group sessions. All this with COVID and members safety at the forefront. The main opening will be in September 2020 with Frenchie and his team being on hand to answer questions now and when they open. You can find more information and register your interest here.
Conclusion – Coworking after COVID
There is still no concrete answer what the future might hold when it comes to coworking after COVID-19 and if people will return back to their workspaces after the pandemic is said and done. Many industries have survived just fine by going the teleworking route, so the likelihood of them not going back to “normal” might be out of the cards, despite the employees missing their old setting. However, as much as a grey area it might be still, there is no denying that there has already been a massive transformation towards the shared office spaces model.

In the end, not everyone has all the right tools or equipment to work from home long term, and underlying growth genuinely comes from in-person human interaction. And in order to obtain that, leveraging a shared workspace is the compelling key to not only foster productivity, innovation, and teamwork but to cultivate the positive, healthy mindset that has been lacking for too long.
